Hot Rocks Massage

When I first wrote the series, I was really looking forward to trying all of these different modalities and the Hot Rocks massage was something that I couldn't wait to try.

My crew and I arrived at the White Oaks Conference Resort at Niagra on the lake for an interview with the director of the spa, Sheila Spears. Sheila explained that most hotels and resorts found it necessary to have a spa on the premises. "20 years ago people wanted to make sure that we had a pool, 10 years ago if we had a gym and fitness center and today most of our guests want spa facilities." She also told me that businesses were organizing their seminars around spa facilities, utilizing the meditation classes and the different types of massage that are featured at the resort.After the interview with Sheila, I was ready for the next interview which also included my massage. My masseuse had been specially trained in the Hot Rocks massage and she was magic.

There are 54 stones that are used in the massage. These are special volcanic rocks. The stones are heated in a thermostatically controlled vat of water. Once they are heated, several stones are placed on the massage table with a towel placed over them. I wasn't real sure how these would feel on my back as I suffer from chronic back pain due to an old injury, but I had nothing to worry about as it felt wonderful. Once I got comfortable, she placed stones over my chest and stomach area. Once the stones are in place the masseuse rubbed oil on my body and begin to massage me all over with the hot rocks. I must tell you that this is one of the most incredible experiences that I have ever had. She first worked on my arms and then my legs. Once she got to my feet she placed rocks in between my toes and massaged my feet. She then moved to my face and massaged my cheekbones, forehead and everything in between. Once the front was finished, I was rolled over and she began the whole process on my back This was heaven. I would recommend this massage to anyone, especially if you can't take the intense pressure of a Swedish massage or a heavy intensive pressure massage.
